Об учебном пособии
Данное пособие является продолжением учебника одноимённого автора «Общий курс английского языка. Часть 3 (уровни В2 – С2)». Оно состоит из 6 блоков, в каждом из которых дана группа тестов и упражнение 1, направленные на углублённое закрепление и проработку грамматики и лексики (10 868 английских слов и идиом) предыдущей части учебного пособия; и упражнений 2 – 4 на перевод с русского на английский, с английского на русский, пересказ и аудирование оригинала рассказа Джека Лондона «Держись», адаптированного по методике © Лингвистический Реаниматор (всего 5 333 слова, американизма и идиомы).
Тесты и упражнение 1 не адаптированы, материал представлен преимущественно на английском языке. Рекомендую приступать к занятиям по данному учебнику после окончания работы над «Общим курсом английского языка. Часть 3 (уровни В2 – С2)».
Работа по данной книге покажет, насколько хорошо вы проработали грамматику и лексику предыдущей части учебника. В случае добросовестной проработки предыдущей части, вы сможете выполнять тесты и упражнение 1 без использования справочных материалов и словаря.

Комментарий автора
Считается, что на уровне носителя языка (С2) лексический запас должен составлять не менее 10 000 – 20 000 слов. Давайте разберёмся, что именно это означает, чтобы не строить себе лишних иллюзий.
В данном случае речь идёт именно об активном словарном запасе, а не о пассивном. Активным словарным запасом является тот набор слов, которым говорящий пользуется ежедневно.
Пассивным словарным запасом являются слова и выражения, которые их носитель без труда распознаёт в текстах или речи, и с лёгкостью переводит на свой родной язык, избегая, при этом, их употребления.
Данное учебное пособие содержит 16 201 английское слово и идиому. То, в каком именно запасе, активном или пассивном, останется у вас данная лексика, целиком зависит от вас.
Этот учебник можно пройти, просто выполнив все тесты и упражнения, как говорится, не напрягаясь, а можно пройти его, как следует, выучив всю предлагаемую лексику. Понятно, что результат во втором случае будет намного выше, чем в первом.
Хотя очень возможно, что четырёх таких книг кому-то окажется недостаточно для получения знаний уровня С2. Поэтому в настоящее время к изданию готовится серия подобных учебников.

Аудирование
Знание английского языка на уровне С2 предполагает овладение словарным запасом не менее 10 000 – 20 000 слов, всей нормативной грамматикой; а также свободное восприятие английской / американской речи на слух.

Аудирование – самая сложная, но при этом неотъемлемая составляющая, с которой приходится сталкиваться при изучении английского языка. Однако, данную проблему можно решить, если ежедневно «погружать» себя в английскую и американскую речь. Для этого в интернете есть масса возможностей.

Специальные обозначения
Не существует законного способа (there be..* no legitimate [лиджитимэт] way/ am, is, are) – группа русских слов / их перевод на английский язык (оригинальный авторский текст), в некоторых случаях русская транскрипция (ударная гласная в ней подчёркнута и выделена).
Двоеточие после глагола означает, что нужно изменить его форму, звёздочка означает, что данный глагол неправильный.
После слеша даны формы неправильного глагола, из которых нужно выбрать правильный вариант.
…road – троеточие перед словом означает, что на данном месте необхадим определённый или неопределённый артикль.

Yogurt Dreams
Danya sat on the windowsill looking at the stars.
It was already late, high time to sleep, but he did not want. It happened practically every day. Mom and Dad were preoccupied with this issue.
They consulted the best doctors in the city, the men of medicine. They prescribed various pills and potions to the boy, but it didn’t work. Just at that time Danya’s grandmother came to visit them.
One late evening, when Danya, instead of going to bed, watched the stars, she quietly entered the room, sat down in the chair and asked:
– Do you like the stars?
– Yes, granny, I really love them, it seems to me that there are so many secrets and mysteries in the night sky. I like to look at the stars at night and dream.
– What do you usually dream of?
– I don’t even know how to explain this, I just sit and dream about nothing. And my soul is so pleased by it.
– But it’s probably not very interesting to dream about nothing. – she wondered.
– Well, I apparently haven’t meant it. For example, I look at a star and think what it will be like if you approach it, what happens on it and who lives there.
In my opinion, wizards, knights and beautiful princesses live on the stars, although there are evil magicians and all kinds of Baba Yaga there, but the knights always defeat them all.
– Oh, Danya, what a fellow you are! – You’ve told me such a beautiful bedtime story. Well, do you really don’t want to sleep?
– No, grandma, I absolutely don’t want to sleep. – the boy answered sadly and sighed heavily.

So he did everything exactly as his grandmother had told, and he found himself in an unusual dream. Danya dreamed that he was standing in line at the Dreams Shop, and there were two more kids – a boy and a girl in front of him.
Behind the counter there was quite an extraordinary seller – an old man, dressed absolutely like a magician. And he asked the girl:
«What would you like to choose tonight, Agnes?»
– I would like something completely unbelievable, for example, I could ride on a cloud, if it’s possible.
– Oh, you wound me, dear Agnes, our store provides top-quality service, so nothing is impossible here. Please take your order. – answered the seller, giving the girl some kind of a gold badge. – I wish yoy took pleasure in viewing!
After the boy standing in front of Danya in line made his order, his turn came. He thought for a moment, and, on greeting the seller, hesitantly asked:
– Is it possible to order a dream about that little star? – and he showed his most beloved star in the sky.
– Of course it’s possible, it is even necessary. – the seller exclaimed, giving the boy a badge. – Enjoy your viewing!
And then something unbelievable happened – Danya found himself on his star. It was so beautiful – bright colorful gardens bloomed here, bizarre beautiful birds of an unfamiliar breed and elves were flying around, animals of unprecedented beauty were walking, and there was a castle towered further, on the hill.
Danya walked around the surroundings.
Then he went into the castle and saw a lot of interesting things there. No one was visible inside, but for some reason the boy asked:
– Tell me, please, and whose castle it is?
– Of course it’s yours, sir Daniel! – he heard back.
The castle had a cozy bedroom. Danya was tired, on walking around his star, and wanted to sleep. He lay in a soft bed, covered himself with a duvet and fell asleep very quickly.
– Danya, get up! – he suddenly heard his grandmother’s voice. «It’s ten o’clock in the morning, wash yourself and sit down for breakfast.»
The boy sat at the table, the breakfast seemed to him unusually tasty. He was very happy and with pleasure told his granny everything that he had managed to see in his yogurt dream.
When it was time to go to bed, he went to his grandma, who was cooking something, standing at the stove, and asked:
– Granny, it’s time to sleep, I’ve come for my yogurt dreams, give me, please, a glass of your wonderful yogurt!
The next morning, telling his grandmother another unusual dreams about the star, Danya asked:
– Granny, what is a secret of your magical yogurt, what do you put there?»
Grandmother got thoughtful for a while and then answered:
– I put there the freshest home-made yogurt, add small pieces of various delicious fruits according to my mood, and a very large portion of my love for you, my boy. In fact, that’s all.

Не принимая во внимание несчастные случаи (barring accidents), хороший бродяга (…good hobo), молодой и ловкий (with youth and agility), может продержаться на поезде (can hold a train down), невзирая на все усилия (despite all …efforts) поездной команды (of …train-crew) его ссадить (to «ditch» him) – учитывая (given), конечно (of course), что всё это происходит в ночное время (night-time), и это самое обязательное условие (as an essential condition).
Когда такой бродяга (when such …hobo), при таких условиях (under such conditions), решает (make.. up his mind) что (that) ему нужно продержаться на поезде (he be..* going to hold her down/ am, is, are), либо (either) он на нём удерживается (he do.. hold her down), либо (or) его подводит нелепая случайность (chance trip.. him up).
Не существует законного способа (there be..* no legitimate [лиджитимэт] way/ am, is, are), за исключением (short of) убийства (murder), с помощью которого (whereby) экипаж поезда (…train-crew) может его ссадить (can ditch him). То, что проводники (that train-crews) не останавливались (not stop../ Present Perfect) перед убийством (short of murder) такие слухи ходят сейчас (be..* a current belief/ am, is, are) в мире бродяг (in ....tramp world). Не получив (not having had) подобного опыта (that particular experience) будучи бродягой (in my tramp days) я не могу ручаться (I cannot vouch) за это (for it) лично (personally).
Но (but) я слыхал, что такое (this I hear..*/ heard/ heard// Present Perfect) происходит на «скверных» дорогах (of the «bad» roads). Если бродяга (when …tramp) залез под поезд («go..* underneath,»/ went/ gone// Present Perfect) и устроился на оси (on …rods), а поезд (and …train be..*/ am, is, are// Present Simple) движется (in motion), очевидно, что (there be..* apparently/ am, is, are) нет никакого способа (no way) снять его оттуда (of dislodging him) до тех пор, пока (until) поезд не остановится (…train stop..).
Бродяга (…tramp), уютно (snugly) устроившийся (ensconce.. [инсконс]) на оси (inside …truck), в окружении четырёх колёс вагона (with the four wheels) и иныхприспособлений (and all the framework) вокруг него (around him), плюёт (have..* the «cinch»/ has) на проводников (on …crew) – или (or) ему так кажется (so he think..), до тех пор, пока (until) однажды (some day) он не попадёт (he ride.. the rods) на скверную дорогу (on …bad road).
Скверной дорогой (bad road) обычно является (be..* usually) та (one) на которой (on which) совсем недавно (a short time previously [привьёзли]) один или несколько поездных служащих (one or several trainmen) было убито (be..* killed/ was, were/ been// Present Perfect) бродягами (by tramps). Горе бродяге (heaven pity …tramp) если его поймают (who be..* caught/ am, is, are) под поездом («underneath») на такойдороге (on such a road) – потому что (for) его поймают (caught he is), даже, если (though) поезд (…train) будет двигаться (be going) со скоростью 60 миль в час (sixty miles an hour).
Кондуктор (…«shack») (тормозной кондуктор (brakeman), берёт соединительную муфту (take.. …coupling-pin) и длинный шнур (and a length of bell-cord) выходит на площадку (to …platform) перед вагоном (in front of …truck) под которым (in which) едет бродяга(…tramp ride../ Present Continuous).
Кондуктор (…shack) прикрепляет (fasten..) муфту (…coupling-pin) к шнуру (to …bell-cord), спускает её вниз (drop.. the former down) между (between) платформами (…platforms), и начинает орудовать (and pay.. out) последней (the latter). Муфта (…coupling-pin) отлетает от рельсов (strike.. the ties between the rails), ударяется (rebound..) о днище (against …bottom) вагона (of …car), и (and) опять отлетает от рельсов (again strike.. the ties).
Проводник (…shack) травит шнур, посылая его (play.. it) взад и вперёд (back and forth), то в одну сторону (now to this side), то в другую (now to the other), то отпускает (let.. it out) немного (a bit) то подтягивает (and haul.. [хоул] it) чуть-чуть на себя (in a bit), давая своему оружию (give.. his weapon) возможность произвести (opportunity) все виды (for every variety) ударов (of impact [импэкт]) и отскоков (and rebound). Я направлялся (I be..*/ was, were/ been) из Оттавы (in Ottawa), на запад (bound west) по Канадско-Тихоокеанской железной дороге (over the Canadian Pacific).
Три тысячи миль (three thousand miles) этой дороги (of that road) предстояло мне преодолеть (stretch.. before me); стояла осень (it be..* the fall of the year/ was, were/ been), и мне нужно было (and I have..* to/ had/ had) пересечь Манитобу (cross Manitoba) и Скалистые Горы (and the Rocky Mountains). Со дня на день можно было ожидать (I can..* expect/ could) наступления холодов («crimpy» weather), и любая проволочка (and every moment of delay [дилэй]) увеличивала шансы насладиться (increase..) всеми прелестями зимней непогоды (the frigid [фриджит] hardships of the journey). К тому же (furthermore), я был в мерзком настроении (I be.. * disgusted).
Расстояние (…distance) между (between) Монреалем и Оттавой (Montreal and Ottawa) составляет (be..*/ am, is, are) 120 миль (one hundred and twenty miles). Кроме того (furthermore), отвратное настроение (my disgust) стало ещё отвратней (be..* heightened/ was, were/ been// Past Perfect) после того, как я провёл один день (by the one day I spend..*/ spent/ spent// Past Perfect) в Оттаве (in Ottawa) пытаясь раздобыть (try.. to get) одежду (an outfit of clothing) для долгого путешествия (for my long journey). Здесь позвольте мне официально заявить (let me put it on record right here) что Оттава (that Ottawa), (за одним исключением (with one exception), является самым никудышним городом (be..* the hardest town/ am, is, are) в Соединённых Штатах и Канаде (in the United States and Canada [кэнеда]) для попрошайничества одежды (to beg clothes in);
исключением (the one exception) является Вашингтон округа Колумбия (be..* Washington, D.C./ am, is, are). Последний (the latter) приемлемый город (fair city), но и он – нечто (be..* the limit). Я провёл (I spend..*/ spent/ spent) в нём 2 недели (two weeks there) пытаясь выпросить (try.. to beg) пару обуви (a pair of shoes), а после (and then) должен был добраться (have..* to go on/ had/ had) аж до Джерси-Сити (to Jersey City before) прежде чем я получил её (I get..* them/ got/ got).
Но вернёмся (but to return) к Оттаве (to Ottawa). Ровно в 8 (at eight sharp) утра (in the morning) я отправился (I start.. out) на поиски одежды (after clothes). Я энергично работал (I work.. energetically) весь день (all day). Клянусь (I swear), я прошёл (I walk..) 40 миль (forty miles). Я беседовал (I interview..) с домохозяйками (…housewives) (тысячи домов (of a thousand homes). Я дажене променял эту работу (I not even knock.. off work) на обед (for dinner).
И в 6 часов (and at six) по полудню (in the afternoon), после 10 часов (after ten hours) непрерывного (of unremitting [анремитинг]) и удручающего труда (and depressing toil [тойл]), у меня не было даже рубашки (I be..* still shy one shirt/ was, were), а если говорить о (while the pair) брюках (of trousers) которые мне удалось раздобыть (I manage.. to acquire [эквай
]) они мне были тесны (be..* tight/ was, were) и, более того (and, moreover), они демонстрировали (show/ Past Continuous) все признаки (all the signs) раннего распада (of an earlydisintegration).
В 6 часов (at six) я приостановил работу (I quit* work/ quit/ quit) и направился (and head.. for) к железнодорожной станции (the railroad yards), в надежде (expecting) раздобыть что-нибудь (to pick up something) поесть (to eat) по дороге (on the way). Но (but) моё невезение (my hard luck) всё ещё не покидало меня (be..* still with me/ was, were). Мне отказывали в еде (I be..* refused food) дом за домом (at house after house). Потом наконец (then) я получил подаяние (I get..* a «hand-out»/ got/ got).
Я воспрянул духом (my spirits soar..), так как (for) это было самое объёмное подаяние (it be..* the largest hand-out/ was, were) которое я когда-либо видел (I ever see..*/ saw/ seen// Past Perfect) на протяжении длительного (in a long) и насыщенного событиями (and varied) периода попрошайничества (experience). Я поспешил (I hurry..) на пустырь (to …vacant lot) и открыл его (and open.. it). Сначала (first), я увидел пирожное (I see..* cake/ saw/ seen), потом ещё пирожное (then more cake), разнообразные виды и сорта пирожных (all kinds and makes of cake), (а потом ещё и ещё (and then some). Там были только пирожные (it be..* all cake/ was, were). Никакого хлеба с маслом (no bread and butter) с толстыми (with thick) плотными кусками (firm slices) мяса (of meat) в качестве слоёв (between) – ничего (nothing) кроме пирожных (but cake); и я (and I) человек, который (who) больше всего на свете (of all things) ненавидел именно пирожные (abhor.. [эбхо
] cake most)!
